Portrait Artists
Jenny Saville
Jenny
Saville was born in 1970 in Cambridge, England, but Saville currently
lives and works in Oxford. She received her B.A. Honors Fine Art from
Glasgow School of Art, Scotland, and her works are featured in several
public collections; which include: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York; The Broad, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and
Saatchi Collection, London. Jenny Saville is known for her portraits
of female nudes that depict “deformed, obese, brutalized, or mutilated”
forms. She does this in order to work against the “ideal woman” that has
been depicted in “male-dominated” art throughout history. I like Jenny
Saville’s work because she is opening the public's eyes to the
objectification of women in modern society by capturing the disturbing
parts about the human body that the media never shows. I also like that
her works are evolving and are now, depicting more beautiful topics and
scenery, which shows that she is not limiting herself to the ugly
aspects of society.

Chuck Close
Chuck Close is an American artist and photographer born in Monroe, Washington in 1940. Throughout most of his career, Close has been thought of as a painter however, he has explored both photography and printmaking, and is now referred to as a photo realist. Some consider him “one of the most important figures in contemporary art” when considering how he has tested the “boundaries of photographic means, methods, and approaches.” Chuck Close’s work is truly an inspiration for two reasons: 1) he suffers from an inability to recognize faces (facial blindness), and 2) he uses a brush-holding device strapped to his forearm and wrist since 1988 due to paralysis caused by a spinal artery collapse. “The photographic origin of each Close painting is well known; however, Close’s exploration of the medium itself extends far beyond the use of photographs as a programmatic tool,” said Parrish Art Museum Director and exhibition co-organizer Terrie Sultan. “Whether he uses a photographic image as source material or as an end in and of itself, everything he creates begins with a photograph. Chuck Close Photographs provides an in-depth look at photography as the foundation of Close’s creative process.” Close's exploration of the use of so many different mediums is intriguing. I am interested in learning how to express myself through the use of a variety of mediums, so his work is a prime example of the work I want to produce. His use of color and black and white to emphasis the faces in his portraits as well as the abstract shapes he uses to form his images creates movement and life in his art.

Miss Van
Miss Van, whose given name is Vanessa Alice Bensimon, was born in 1973 in Toulouse, France, but has spent most of her life in Barcelona, Spain. She is a French gallery artist whose career began in the early 1990s when she was 18 to 20 years old. At that time, she and some of her fellow artists participated in creating street art – graffiti – that depicted female characters she called poupees, or dolls, that were bold-lined, simplistic, and colorful. Ms. Van “ is known for initiating the feminine movement in the Street Art. Her imagery covers a whole variety of female forms and their turbulent emotions.” Miss Van demonstrates her diversity by creating “cheerful, colorful, and cartoonish” outdoor work while presenting bizarre “darker, more grotesque” scenes in her gallery exhibits. Today, Miss Van uses a “variety of mixed media” to create characters “inspired by dancers and music” that reinforce “self-expression” and “visual storytelling.“ In addition to writing and publishing books, she has had her work displayed in galleries all over the world, including Europe, USA and Asia. Miss Van’s work has evolved over her career and once stated, “I’m evolving and growing up with my paintings. It’s the only way, when you paint with emotions and feelings. I’m trying to be true with myself.” I find Miss Van’s work to be fun but also intriguing. The colors Van uses make her art fun, but the images’ strange costumes and backgrounds work to get the viewer wondering what kind of story Van is trying to tell with her art. I would like to be able to get people interested in my work as Van does, and that is why I chose her for my blog.

Steve McCurry
Steve
McCurry, born in 1950, has won many awards for his work. Steve McCurry
has stated, “What is important to my work is the individual picture.”
He has traveled the world covering various wars as a photojournalist.
One of his most famous photographs was used on the cover of National
Geographic magazine in June of 1985, “Afghan Girl.” Sharbat Gula ‘s
photo has been compared to Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. I admire
McCurry’s ability to brave the horrors of war, his steadiness of nerves,
and his ability to capture such moving images of people that “retain
the human element” even in such high pressure / stressful environments.

Françoise Nielly
Françoise Nielly was born in 1960 in Marseille, France. She is a painter and photographer, and she lives and paints in Montmartre. Originally Nielly worked in advertising, but decided that the pressure of her job was too much for her. For her, a change of career was “necessary for self-preservation”. She uses an array of bright colors to construct her portraits in order to bring a sort of energy to her paintings. The bright colors and angular shapes that create the image create a rhythm or movement into her pieces. In high school I worked to create something similar with my recreation of family photos, and I would like to continue to work with Nielly’s style, which I absolutely love.

Leroy Neiman
Leroy Neiman was born LeRoy Leslie Runquist in 1921 in Saint
Paul, Minnesota and died in 2012. He is
“best known for his brilliantly colored, stunningly energetic images of
sporting events and leisure activities.” I admire Leroy Neiman’s work because
his portraits depict the thrill and excitement his subject feels each time the athlete or artist
performs the activity he/she excels in.

Cindy Sherman
Cindy Sherman was born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New York. Initially, while in art school, Ms. Sherman painted in "super-realistic style." By the end of the 1970s, she "turned to photography." Sherman's career goal has been to examine "a woman's role in modern-day society and the way she's oppressed and misrepresented." With the use of her camera, Cindy Sherman views women's roles in the world in unconventional ways. I appreciate her desire to negate stereotypes.
